Underpinning psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a vast body of work that began with Freud, but the theory doesn't have an overt presence in the room. Psychotherapy in practice is more a process of discovery for both therapist and client. It can be challenging, exciting, frightening – even funny - as we both try to better understand the circumstances and patterns that have brought you to therapy. It's a good idea to have a no-obligation free session, to see what it's like.

Therapy is an investment in your current and future wellbeing. I join my clients in identifying the source of their concerns, and developing positive change. Whether you're struggling with chronic mental health stemming from trauma, or wanting to figure out why life has felt so hard lately, I am ready to listen with care and non-judgement. I have navigated a wide variety of needs with people who've never experienced therapy before, people who've seem to have tried everything, and people somewhere in between. Wherever you are, and wherever you'd like to go, we'll find the way forward.

Hello, I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and specialist in Psychotherapy, with extensive clinical experience. I have worked with clients across the lifespan. As well as in my private practice, I have worked with the corporate sector and in a variety of settings, like hospitals and out-patients clinics. I studied Psychology in Spain and since 1998, I have worked in mental health services in the UK. The talking therapy I provide is influenced by psychoanalytic theories and practices, which is explorative. I can draw upon other therapeutic models, like cognitive behavioural approaches when more focus and direction is needed.

When you contact me initially I will walk you through some of the options and if we decide to work together I will meet you (or you and your family/significant people in your life) ‘where you are’ in life. We may decide to focus on getting a better understanding of the ways that your early experiences have influenced the ways you perceive the world and relate to people around you. We may focus purely on the present and your goals for the future. Based on your circumstances we may decide to do some time limited or long term therapy.

Psychotherapeutic work is relational in nature and so it requires a genuine personal engagement. The challenge is having conversations that break us out of ourselves, our stories, dramas and fear. Psychotherapy and counselling are about seeing a new way of relating to ourselves and others, to life and to the world.

You feel so alone. You don’t like yourself much. You get stuck in thought spirals, and can't stop thinking about horrible memories you'd rather forget. You can be easily irritated, or feel lost and distant from others. You aren't sleeping well. You don’t fit in, and worry if others knew the real you, they wouldn’t want to be your friend. You feel you worry too much about what others think of you. Life feels overwhelming and like it’s slipping out of control.

I specialise in eating disorders and have 17 years’ experience as a behaviour change and obesity prevention scientist at Cambridge University. I support people with binge eating, emotional eating, weight loss struggles, and bulimia. I help clients discover and take charge of their hidden eating triggers and transform their relationship with food. Sessions often focus on getting freedom from constant thoughts about food and weight and escaping the cycle of yo-yo dieting and weight gain. Gain understanding about what has prevented you from recovery in the past so you can overcome that, and live life without restriction or bingeing.

You may want to be happier because you find yourself struggling to get through the day as a result of troubling situations or overwhelming experiences and issues. Your will may be dampened by a difficult history of upbringing in your family or early social care environment. You may long to reconnect with yourself and others, personally and / or professionally and to rekindle your sense of self worth. You may wish follow your own pathway on the rocky road of life based on a deep sense of inner knowing, which will help you revive vitality for life.

I am a qualified integrative counsellor ,CBT psychotherapist working towards accreditation and a couple therapist . I work mainly in the humanistic approach, and I also use elements from other approaches such as CBT (cognitive-behavioural therapy) or psychodynamic therapy, which allows me to choose optimal therapeutic strategies for each client individually. The values on which the humanistic approach is based, such as empathy, respect, authenticity and perception of values in every human being, are very close to me. I firmly believe that being truly understood, heard and accepted the way you are can change our lives.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
